“What do you care?”

With a sigh, I set my teacup in the sink and turned to Asher, glaring at me from the table.

Will I be a good mother? It was a ridiculous thought, but with the way Asher pressed my buttons and won, I couldn’t help but wonder. Maybe I wasn’t ready. Ha! Of course not. I was still a teenager. But as Asher gazed at me with his customary scowl, I raised my chin. No. I would not let this go. He was pack, and therefore, as an underage pup, my responsibility. I would find a way to reach him, even if it killed me.

“Why wouldn’t I?” I asked calmly before sitting across from him at the table.

His eyes slid to the right before he sneered, “You can’t fool me. You’re a dirty witch—”

“Enough,” I said, slamming my hand against the table.

He stopped up short, his mouth dropping open, and I took the advantage, such as it was. “If you don’t want to like me because I’m an ass, fine. But you will not judge me for being a witch. We both have to eat to live. We both crap in the same bathroom. We’re both supernatural . . .”

I trailed off because I was pretty sure his eyes glazed over. Where are you, Bane?

He left hours ago, and I couldn’t feel him through the bond, which meant he was too far away or . . . Yeah, not going there.

“Well?” I said, pushing aside my fears. I had to think of the baby, and I hardly needed more stress. I was a bundle of nerves already.

“You’re weird,” he finally said.

With a shrug, I rose and wiped my brow. “If you want help, I’ll help, but either way, your homework has to get done.”

“I never had to do homework before,” he mumbled.

“Hm. You still have to do it now. Asher, do you know why you’re here?”

He dropped his head and rolled his pencil between his fingers. “Because my uncle didn’t want me.”

My heart broke at his dull tone, and I averted my pained gaze as I said casually, “Oh? I thought it was because he was protecting you.”

“That’s dumb. Why would sending me away protect me?”

“I’m not sure. I think Bane said it was safer for you here because there’s, I don’t know, confusion about your place in the pack?”

I shrugged to show my feigned confusion and said over my shoulder as I walked away, “Homework. In this house, school is important.”

He didn’t respond, but I hoped with a burn in my heart that he believed me because his pain at being abandoned would never fade if he refused to see the truth.
